Amazon Getting Close To An HQ2 Decision?
Last Summer Amazon began a coast to coast search for the location of its fabled HQ2. Hundreds of cities from Honolulu (not kidding) to NYC put their best pitches together, trying to convince Jeff Bezos to bring HQ2 and its 50,000 jobs to their hometown. In January that list was culled to 20 serious contenders, which Amazon has visited and evaluated over the ensuing months. Since then rumors have circulated about Atlanta, Austin and Northern Virginia (DC area) being the top contenders.
Now it looks like there may be some tell signs about who’ll land HQ2. There are clues that Northern Virginia may get the gig. Exhibit A – Amazon recently posted a job listing seeking an economic development manager in the area. Exhibit B – Jeff Bezos is scheduled to speak at an unusually large meeting of the local Economic Club on Thursday, which will be attended by both the Governors of Virginia and Maryland. Amazon has preemptively stated that they won’t announce a decision during the luncheon – they’ve just said they’ll make an announcement sometime before the end of the year. Regardless, I think the safe money lands somewhere around Fairfax County, Virginia.
