2018 Is The REAL Year Of Mobile
According to the Chinese Calendar 2018 is supposed to be the Year of the Dog. However if you work in media you know it’s actually the Year of Mobile, because in 2018 mobile advertising will finally surpass TV in US ad spending. And that stat doesn’t even include non-mobile web ads or any kind of eCommerce spending – just straight mobile advertising.
As you can see in the eMarketer link and the graphic below, mobile advertising now commands 33.9% of US media spending compared to TV’s 31.6%. What’s even more startling is the future forecast – by 2022 (just four years from now) mobile will comprise almost half of all US ad spending.
If these stats seem surprising to you just remember the golden rule of advertising. Media dollars always follow time spent. So as our media consumption shifts to mobile it makes sense that ad dollars will follow. The proof of that theory is definitely in these numbers.
