Farewell Go90, We Hardly Knew Thee
Yesterday Verizon announced plans to shut down its Go90 video streaming platform. Originally launched in 2015, Go90 was envisioned to be a content hub for all things mobile streaming. From an inaugural Kayne West concert, to Kobe Bryant’s short film “Dear Basketball”, to a sundry of original series, Go90 took a kitchen sink approach by trying to be all things to all people. Despite the effort and considerable a promotional push from Verizon and its Yahoo brand, Go90 topped out at only 17M monthly users.
So where does Verizon go from here for mobile streaming? The good news is that they have plenty of existing distribution options for video content within their Oath platform. They’ve spent the last six months reassigning Go90 employees to these other business units to facilitate the transition. So the content, and employees working on the content, will still be there. We just won’t be using Go90 to consume said content after July 31st.
