And Winners Of Amazon HQ2 Are . . .
*** Quick update on a story from last week ***
Today Amazon is expected to announce the selection of two cities for its HQ2 buildout – Long Island City in Queens, NY, and Crystal City in Northern Virginia. As I posted last week, Amazon decided to split its secondary HQ (and 50,000 jobs that come with it) into two locations. Both are in underdeveloped areas directly adjacent to major business and government centers.
The NYC part is a no brainer. The vast employee talent pool and proximity to other corporate HQs make it a great East Coast home to get business done. The DC move is a little more nuanced. Right now Amazon is in a dogfight with Google to win a $10B Pentagon contract. Since Crystal City is basically next door to the Pentagon this office placement may give Amazon a leg up with their bid. Then there’s the obvious government relations (aka lobbying) work that Amazon needs to ramp up. Having an office in the shadow of the Capitol building will certainly help with this.
Expect two very happy press conferences today, as city leaders in NYC and DC celebrate their big wins.
