Comcast Playing Both Sides Of The Streaming Revolution
Per the lyrics of the late, great Chris Cornell from one of his Audioslave songs, “I am not your rolling wheels . . . I am the highway.” That line could easily be used to describe Comcast’s business strategy as they successfully play both sides of the streaming game.
Here’s the paradox of Comcast. On one hand they’re the victim who’s losing cable subscribers by the millions as cord cutters migrate to streaming. However at the same time Comcast is also winning with this evolution, because they’re picking up high-speed internet subs – the service needed to stream all those new video services in the first place.
This is a brilliant example of diversifying a business model to stay ahead of your industry’s transformation. In Comcast’s case, they’re shifting from being the content bundler and legacy distribution channel to become the next gen distribution channel. This is allowing Comcast to stay relevant while the other cable operators and TV networks are getting steamrolled by the digital video revolution.
