Spotify Account Hacks?
Last February I posted a story about songs by “fake” artists on Spotify racking up huge play totals and royalty payments. Now, almost a year later, the problem appears to be getting worse. According to a report by the BBC, Spotify users are starting to see unknown artists/songs pop up in their playlists. Here’s an example of what I’m referring to.
These songs are typically very short (under :30) and don’t have vocals – so just think of a quick audio track. To make this even more odd, the artists behind these songs usually have zero internet or social presence beyond the songs themselves. It’s as if these phantom songs were placed in listeners’ playlists just to get spins and generate royalties. The BBC asked Spotify for contact information from some artists in question, but the streamer declined to provide any backup.
Because these songs are showing up in listeners’ playlist (where you have to intentionally add songs), there’s mounting speculation that Spotify’s system has somehow been hacked. Either that of a whole bunch of listeners have fallen in love with Bergenulo Five without even knowing who they are. 🙂
