What Is Set TV And Why Is Everyone Suing Them?
On Monday a cohort of video producers, including Netflix, Amazon and several Hollywood studios filed a joint lawsuit against a video streaming service called Set TV. So what would cause sworn enemies across the video-scape to join forces against Set TV? Money, of course.
For some background Set TV is a streaming aggregator who provides 500+ channels of video content from the plaintiffs listed above to subscribers for only $20/mo. This deal sounds too good to be true because it isn’t. According to the lawsuit Set TV doesn’t have these video licensing rights, so they’re effectively pirating others’ content. And as for that $20/mo subscribers pay, Set TV just keeps all that money for themselves. Nice gig if you can get away with it!
I’m not a legal expert but this seems like a pretty strong case against Set TV. Besides just winning this lawsuit video content producers will have to become even more vigilant against new tech-enabled distribution methods which will begin sprouting up around them.
