It’s Huawei’s World, And We’re Just Living In It
Quick question . . . who are the two leading smartphone manufacturers in the world? I’m betting you said Apple and Samsung in whatever order, right? If those are your guesses you’d be wrong. Right now the world’s top handset manufacturer is Samsung, followed by the biggest company you’ve never heard of called Huawei in the #2 position. Huawei? Even after reading about Huawei I didn’t know how to pronounce their name, which incidentally sounds like “wah-way”.
So what’s going on with the global order of handset sales? Overall the market has matured and is even starting to decline. In Q2 there were 2% fewer smartphones sold than in Q2’17. Most of these new smartphone sales are occurring in emerging markets (think India, China, Philippine’s, etc.). Since these consumers have less disposable income they’re opting for cheaper Android-based handsets. That’s bad news for super-premium Apple, and right in the wheelhouse of Chinese tech discounter Huawei. As you can see in the graphic below, Huawei could even surpass Samsung for total handset sales by 2019.
So does the future below to Huawei? If it does we better at least learn how to pronounce their brand name.
