Meet The New PC Boss, Same As The Old PC Boss
Last week the research firm IDC released its global PC sales figures from the last 12 months, and it looks like we have a new top dog in the space. Lenovo’s share of global sales rose to 24%, surpassing HP’s 23% to take the crown. If this headline seems reminiscent you have a good memory. Exactly five years ago Lenovo topped HP in PC sales for the first time, only to fall back a year later. So basically these two have been yo-yoing for the lead over the past several years.
Regardless of the market share jockeying the PC sector is still in trouble. YoY global PC shipments have dropped 1% over the past 12 months, as consumers use their increasingly powerful smartphones for tasks that used to be done on a desktop or laptop computer. Therefore, no matter who’s #1 or #2 in the market share race, both Lenovo and HP need to innovate new hybrid tech products to get back ahead of consumers’ changing tastes and reset their industry’s growth trajectory.
