Apple TV+ Debuts With A Whimper
Friday was an important date in the video “Streaming Wars”, which are unfolding on a TV screen near you. That’s when Apple TV+ officially launched as a new OTT platform. For a reminder, in March Apple announced the launch of its new video streaming platform Apple TV+, which conveniently debuted a few weeks before Disney+ which is coming on November, 12th. Initially expectations for the new platform were high – how could we not fall in love with a streaming platform featuring a galaxy of stars including Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Anniston, Sesame Street and even the Muppets, right? Well as it turns out launching a new OTT might be a little easier said than done.
On Friday Apple TV+ debuted with just four original series and zero archived shows. Even if the new series were decent that probably wouldn’t be enough content to convince viewers to pay the $4.99/mo subscription cost, but alas the shows aren’t even that good. From a confusing blind caveman dystopian drama called “See”, to “The Morning Show”, an over-produced, network morning show snoozer (starring the aforementioned Anniston) which alternates between confusing and boring, Apple TV+’s reviews are getting panned by critics left and right. Maybe the poor show quality might have to do with the fact that Apple’s production studio has zero experience producing original content, but who knows?!?
Fortunately for Apple they’re not relying on their new video streaming platform to stay in business, In fact they’re giving away 1 yr free subs with the purchase of a new iPhone. But even free won’t make Apple’s underwhelming original content any better.
