Roger Lynch Talks Pandora Strategy
In a recent sit down Pandora CEO Roger Lynch discussed Pandora’s renewed future vision and streamed audio’s competitive landscape with Business Insider. Because BI is behind a fairly aggressive paywall many of you won’t be able to see the original article. So I’ve included a summary published by Inside Radio this morning. As an aside, I always find it interesting to get a radio trade’s perspective on Pandora, since the industry views the streamer as a threat to both their audience and revenue. So keep that bias in mind as you read their article.
For Pandora insiders Mr. Lynch’s comments in the interview will sound familiar. A recommitment to free, ad-supported audio streaming, combined with new products and vertical integration have led to a rejuvenation for the company. The two part move to go all in on programmatic audio while also purchasing AdsWizz, the world’s top audio DSP, has allowed Pandora to bookend both sides of an emerging new market. The other notable is Pandora’s ability to offer subscribtion level functionality, like on-demand song plays, skips, replays, etc., through its highly-coveted Premium Access ad product suite.
These strategy plays have bolstered Pandora with two strong earnings calls in a row and helped the stock rise by almost 60% since the start of 2018. Feels like the plan is working to me.
